Voices in the House Festival
Sydney, Australia - July 10-19, 2006

Maestro Eric Dale Knapp led a massed choir of 250 singers from around the US and London, England for the Voices in the House Festival for Voice and Organ in Sydney, Australia. The featured artist in this three-concert series was renowned organist Frederick Swann, National President of the American Guild of Organists and Organist Emeritus of the Crystal Cathedral.  Former NJCS conductor Terre Johnson was Assistant Conductor and our own Linda Sweetman-Waters was the Rehearsal Accompanist.

The Festival opened with an outstanding organ recital by Fred Swann at St. Mary’s Cathedral on July 14. One commentator has noted that Mr. Swann has probably presided over more ranks of pipes and stopknobs than any other organist in history. His virtuosity was displayed repeatedly throughout the Festival performances, and he delighted the choir with his grace and unassuming nature during rehearsals.

The massed choir, comprised of singers from 14 choirs, including the New Jersey Choral Society and Dr. Johnson’s Vestavia Hills Baptist Choir in Alabama, presented a preview concert, accompanied by Mr. Swann and brass ensemble, at the spectacular Sydney Town Hall on July 16. Mr. Knapp’s dynamic conducting style, commitment and energy inspired the singers to provide a stirring performance, giving the audience a sampling of the exciting sound they would hear at the Festival’s final concert.

The Sydney Opera House Festival Concert was the highlight of the singers’ week in Sydney.  The July 18 performance featured Maurice Duruflé’s masterwork Requiem, Op. 9, Guilmant’s Première Symphonie, Op. 42  for organ and orchestra, the Overture to Egmont, Op. 84 by Beethoven, as well as an arrangement of All Creatures of our God and King, featuring organ and brass, Parry’s coronation anthem I Was Glad, and Ave Maria by Anton Bruckner. The architecturally stunning Opera House, which opened in 1973, is recognized not only as a great concert hall, but also as a dramatic symbol of the beauty of Australia. The choirs given the opportunity to perform in this wonderful hall took home with them unforgettable memories of this enriching choral experience.
